Place in the Process: Learner Characteristics and Analysis

Learner and Cultural Analysis
My current project originated from the course Trends and Issues in Instructional Design. As we started with a Course Design Document, the wheels started spinning. I started with a problem that I really wanted to solve for America and that was eating healthier which stems from planning and household organization. The first design challenge I ran into was the learner analysis. I started to create an activity in which the learners needed to help the main character plan their week. In the events of the family's busy week, I had items like birthdays, soccer practice, PTA meetings etc. Then I realized that if a learner of the Jehovah's Witness religion were to participate, they may be offended as they do not celebrate birthdays. I changed this event into something more neutral to accommodate a larger audience. All-in-all this then provoked me to really consider the several, possible cultural aspects of design. Next, I needed to look into the scope, depth and breadth of the problem. The audience is already compromised for time, so I designed a very simple module to reflect the situation. |

Consideration of Learning Theories
Being a teacher already, I knew quite a bit about learning theories. This assignment really make me think at a deeper level about these theories. Here is one of my responses to a theory comparison: "I have had a lot of training on brain-based learning. I don’t believe the two models (BB & MI) were meant to be compared, I believe that MI is a tier under Brain-Based learning. BB learning is a set of favorable, environmental and psychological conditions in learning were as MI is the accessibility or the way in which we make the incoming communication to the brain work best for each learner. If MI conditions are better for the student (e.g. visual aids/visual learner), this allows the conditions of BB to be more advantageous to learning. What are your thoughts?" - Michelle, Jan 2015 For this project, I choose the simple theory of Adult Learning Theory. I feel that other theories given in the vast world of learning are far complex for my intended outcome. In incorporating the Adult Learning Theory into the entire project, I utilized the content that will be a benefit to them. I would address the approximate length of the training as adults always want to know. I additionally utilized their current knowledge of meal planning, incorporating this into activities. Finally, activities were participatory.
